A little disappointed in the performance of my man Vasquez, I like him a lot. Then it could be very bad matchmaking from the money launderer Al Haymon
Sammy Vasquez is my kind of fighter too! What an intelligent, athletic, ruthless hunter. His footwork is a treat to watch already after only 20 pro fights. He has ideas and guile. And he can obviously hit with authority. His whole body goes into those long bombs.
We know Martinez is tough — he gave the Ghost all kinds of trouble, nearly winning last summer. But look at his face: he wanted out of there by the end of the 2nd, when even feints were making him grimace. He hung on, until he couldn’t.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Vasquez breaking into the top 10, perhaps next year. In fact, I hope they don’t move him too quickly, as he is loaded with promise. But I will say the carefully-matched and lackluster Danny Garcia is lucky he was fighting a fading gatekeeper last weekend rather than Sammy.
I agree with your post. Vasquez’ match before that one was very entertaining, and he surprised me by doing an AMA (ask me anything) hour on reddit a few months ago. A fighter who respects his fan obviously.
BTW Arjay, go on Kovalev vs Pascal to see some comments about the upcoming clash, my friend :)
I thought he did a fine job.
Martinez is a good test and he passed it swell.
