His opponent, the 36-year-old Demian Maia (12 more than MacDonald), has an official record of 18-5-0 (67% finishing rate) and he entered as the No.6 in the same weight class (currently the #1 in this division is Georges St Pierre). Like MacDonald, Maia is also a black belt in bjj and he fought twice in 2013: winning the first bout against Jon Fitch (=Fitch vs Maia) and then losing to Jake Shields (=Maia vs Shields).
