Gatti had lost the first fight against Ward, but then he won the rematch: two of the most spectacular fights of 2002. In this third chapter Arturo Gatti broke his right hand during the fourth round, but even with a single hand he managed to finish the fight; this will be also the last fight of Micky Ward. Review: 2003-06-28, Joe Calzaghe vs Byron Mitchell gets our five stars mainly for the second round that could be appointed “round of the year”. For the thirteenth time Calzaghe defended his WBO super middleweight title against American Byron Mitchell, who had been world champion for the WBA in previous years. Mitchell is the first boxer who knockdown the “Italian Dragon” Calzaghe (he will go down also with Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr a few years later), but Calzaghe has always raised…. Review: 2003-01-25, Ricardo Mayorga vs Vernon Forrest 1 was one of the most spectacularboxing fights of 2003. Mayorga was the champion for the WBA welterweight division, but the boxer to beat was Forrest, as he was undefeated in 35 fights and he came with two wins against Shane Mosley. But in boxing, and especially against a fighter like Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga, the result is never predictable…We are only sure that the first fight Forrest vs Mayorga, ended by TKO in the third round, was one of the most exciting of 2003 (after six months it was held the second fight and Mayorga won by majority decision). Review: 2003-11-15, the first fight between Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera has been (for us) the fight of the year of 2003 (while for Ring Magazine was Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward 3). For Manny Pacquiao was the second fight in the featherweight division, he had won the first one against Serikzhan Yeshmagambetov (2003-03-15), while Barrera was fighting in this category since 2001 when he defeated Naseem Hamed. Manny Pacquiao vs Marco Antonio Barrera 1 was not valid for any world title but it was certainly one of the greatest boxing fights ever (instead their second fight, in 2007, was much less exciting). Review: 2002-11-16, Erik Morales vs Paulie Ayala was certainly one of the best boxing fights of 2002. Erik “El Terrible” Morales had just lost his first fight and the WBC featherweight title against Marco Antonio Barrera, but he chose an opponent not very easy: Paulie Ayala. For Ayala was the first fight in the featherweight division but he was one of the strongest boxers of that time, who had lost only once (against Joichiro Tatsuyoshi in Japan) but who had already won several world titles in the bantam and super bantam division. Review: 2002-01-26, the first fight between Vernon Forrest and Shane Mosley was one of the best fights of 2002. Both boxers had the same age and also a perfect record with no defeats, 38-0-0 for Mosley e 33-0-0 for Forrest, but Vernon “The Viper” Forrest boasted a greater height (8 cm). Vernon Forrest vs Shane Mosley 1 was valid for the WBC welterweight title, won by “Sugar” Shane in 2000 when he fought against Oscar De La Hoya. After this first exciting fight between Vernon Forrest and Shane Mosley, it was organized a rematch in the same year but it was less spectacular. Watch the video!
Review: 2002-09-14, Oscar De La Hoya vs Fernando Vargas was valid for three world titles of the light middleweight division, in fact De La Hoya was the champion for the WBC, while Vargas for the WBA and IBA. Oscar De La Hoya had already lost two times, once against Shane Mosley and the other one with Felix Trinidad (who had also already won against Fernando Vargas). Both boxers had a very spectacular way to fight even if different, and therefore could only be an exciting fight. Watch the video!
Review: 2002-09-07, one of the best boxing fights of 2002 was Roy Jones Jr vs Clinton Woods. Both boxers had in their record only one defeat, but the American had lost for a disqualification against Montell Griffin (in fact in the rematch Roy Jones Jr won by Ko in the first round), however, Woods was a solid fighter, younger than 3 years and had an advantage in terms of reach and height (8cm). Roy Jones Jr vs Clinton Woods was a real defense of the undisputed world champion of the light heavyweight division, in fact there were 7 titles at stake (WBF, WBC, IBF, WBA, IBO, IBA, NBA). Review: 2002-08-17, Joan Guzman vs Fabio Daniel Oliva was one of the best boxing fights of 2002. Both boxers were undefeated and had a similar record, Guzman 17-0-0, while 18-0-0 for Oliva, but the former had already fought for international titles and outside his home country, instead Oliva had never fought outside Argentina, this match was his first time. Joan Guzman vs Fabio Daniel Oliva was valid for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title and it was an exciting fight with a quick knockout in the third round. Watch the video!
Review: 2002-06-08, Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson was probably the most important fight in the heavyweight division of the new millennium. Lennox Lewis was the champion (WBC, IBF and IBO) and he had lost twice in his career (with Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman) but he always managed to take his revenge. Even Mike Tyson had already lost, once against Buster Douglas and twice with Evander Holyfield, Tyson’s career was already in decline, in fact he didn’t fight for a world title for five years.
