Buakaw lost the rematch with Yi Long in 2016 (controversial decision, Buakaw vs Yi Long 2) but then he has won seven bouts beating Sergey Kulyaba (Buakaw vs Kulyaba), Marouan Toutouh (Buakaw vs Toutouh) and Nayanesh Ayman in his last three (Buakaw Banchamek vs Nayanesh Ayman).
His opponent, the former Iska and current Enfusion world champion Jonay Risco, has an official record of 57-14-1 (6 knockouts) but he comes off three consecutive losses, with Davit Kiria, Yassin Baitar and Redouan Laarkoubi; his last victory was against Tayfun Ozcan at the beginning of 2017. He suffered his last loss in 2014 when he faced Karapet Karapetyan, but after this bout he has won seven consecutive fights beating Ruben Lee in his last one (=Kyshenko vs Lee).

The 2005 and 2007 K-1 World MAX Champion Andy Souwer entered this fight with a professional kickboxing record of 158-17-1 (98 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.8 super cruiserweight in the world while his opponent, Jonay Risco, has a record of 52-6-1 (4 knockouts). Souwer has already fought four times in 2015 beating Jiao Fukai (=Souwer vs Fukai) but then he lost the final of the Kunlun Fight Mw tournament (Group A) against Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong (=Souwer vs Sitthichai); after this bout he came back to win with Hideya Tanaka (one of the best knockouts of the year,
