There have been some tremendous fights this year. The world of boxing has had us all on the edge of our seats and this is set to continue. 2023 promises to be a great year for boxing fans everywhere, but for now, our focus remains in 2022.
Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic fights that have taken place in 2022.
Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte
This was a fight that we all knew was going to be a big deal, as it involved a real battle for the heavyweight championship. Tyson Fury went head-to-head against Dillian Whyte and what a fight it was.
Before the fights, betting odds and predictions (to be found on World Sports Network) were likely to have been very interesting. There was no clear indication as to who was going to win the fight, and bookmakers everywhere knew this. The odds showed just how hugely anticipated the fight was. The good news is that those who placed at least one bet on Tyson Fury would have had some winnings to collect.
Dillian Whyte certainly packed quite a lot of punch. While he was something of an underdog, Whyte also showed that he had every right to be there. Fury, did, of course, win his battle with a knockout in the sixth round. The entire match, and especially the knockout, is one that people will be talking about for some time.
Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua 2
With Anthony Joshua as the favorite to win against Oleksandr Usyk, this was a fight that many people looked forward to. Both fighters had a lot to offer the fans the minute they entered the right. However, the night took a turn for the worse for one of the competitors.
This was the first time that Joshua had met Usyk and it may not be the last. However, Usyk was clearly the top dog from very early on in the fight. In fact, his skills proved to be far too much for Joshua. Claiming the victory on points, Usyk has the WBA, the IBF and the WBO titles in his hands.
Now, Anthony Joshua needs to rebuild his career as he suffered his third loss. His opponent, however, has yet to be beaten. It seems that Oleksandr Usyk may well be headed into the ring to fight Tyson Fury sometime. That will, indeed, be a fight that is well worth watching.
Errol Spence Jr. vs Yordenis Ugas
Back in April of this year, we saw Errol Spence fight against Yordenis Ugas. The spectators were no doubt pleased and maybe somewhat surprised to see Spence head back in the ring so soon. After all, he somehow survived a serious car crash back in 2019. The crash did not stop Spence, however, as he went on to beat Danny Garcia before heading to meet Ugas.
Yordenis Ugas managed to send his opponent’s mouthpiece flying, leaving Spence a little dazed. However, the fight was back on track soon after. Spence no doubt hoped that the next time his opponent landed a brutal right hand that it would not have the same results.
Further into the fight, it seemed as if Ugas was set to win. At one point, he had Spence heading straight for the ropes. However, Errol Spence did not seem to take this to heart. In fact, it could be said that this action helped to spur him on. Fighting in his hometown, Spence started to fight back even more aggressively. It seemed that he had a lot of determination in his gloves, much to the dismay of Yordenis Ugas’ admirers.
In round 10, Spence received something of a systemic beating. This beating resulted in his right eye being closed. This ended the round at just one minute and 44 seconds. As a result, it was Errol Spence who came away with the victory. He took away the WBA welterweight title. This is not the first title Spence has received. He also has some IBF and WBC titles. Now he has a new one to add to his collection.
There have been some excellent fights in 2022. It’s safe to say that it has been hard to narrow things down. However, the above three fights must be the most iconic fights of 2022. We can only wonder what 2023 will bring, until then, we can just bask in the glory of the amazing fights we have seen this year.
