Yesterday we analyzed some numbers, records and statistics about Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, but in the sweet science the most important things are punches. So today, as we promised in the previous post, we want to compare Floyd and Pac-Man through the Compubox Stats. We start to examine their last fight in which both boxers got an unanimous decision win in twelve rounds and then we analyze five opponents they had in common: Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley and Miguel Cotto.

Mayweather and Pacquiao’s last fight
Floyd Mayweather Jr | Manny Pacquiao
CompuBox Statistics | Mayweather vs Maidana 2 UD12 | Pacquiao vs Algieri UD12 |
punches thrown | 326 | 669 |
punches landed | 166 (51%) | 229 (34%) |
jabs thrown | 149 | 259 |
jabs landed | 64 (43%) | 42 (16%) |
power punches thrown | 177 | 410 |
power punches landed | 102 (58%) | 187 (46%) |
punches thrown x round | 27,16 | 55,75 |
punches landed x round | 13,83 | 19,08 |
punches “eaten” x round | 10,66 | 9 |
As you can see, Pacquiao performed better than Mayweather in their last fight (except for the accuracy): Manny threw more punches and he even ate less shots than Floyd. The problem is that Maidana and Algieri are obviously two different boxers, so in the next tables you can compare Mayweather and Pacquiao with the same opponents.
Against OSCAR DE LA HOYA
Floyd Mayweather Jr | Manny Pacquiao
CompuBox Statistics | Mayweather def. De La Hoya SD12 | Pacquiao def. De La Hoya RTD8 |
Year | 2007 | 2008 |
punches thrown | 481 | 585 |
punches landed | 207 (43%) | 224 (38%) |
jabs thrown | 240 | 252 |
jabs landed | 69 (29%) | 29 (12%) |
power punches thrown | 241 | 333 |
power punches landed | 138 (57%) | 195 (59%) |
punches thrown x round | 40,08 | 73,12 |
punches landed x round | 17,25 | 28 |
punches “eaten” x round | 10,16 | 10,37 |
Also in the fight against Oscar De La Hoya the numbers are in favor of Manny Pacquiao who threw and landed more punches in 8 rounds than Mayweather in twelve; and don’t forget Floyd won just by split decision against De La Hoya while Pacquiao almost outboxed the ‘Golden Boy’ (who after this bout announced his retirement).
Against RICKY HATTON
Floyd Mayweather Jr | Manny Pacquiao
CompuBox Statistics | Mayweather def Hatton TKO10 | Pacquiao vs Hatton KO2 |
Year | 2007 | 2009 |
punches thrown | 329 | 127 |
punches landed | 129 (39%) | 73 (57%) |
jabs thrown | 72 | 22 |
jabs landed | 29 (40%) | 8 (36%) |
power punches thrown | 257 | 105 |
power punches landed | 100 (39%) | 65 (62%) |
punches thrown x round | 32,9 | 63,5 |
punches landed x round | 12,9 | 36,5 |
punches “eaten” x round | 6,3 | 9 |
Mayweather’s defense was better but Pacquiao was superior also in this fight, having even a better accuracy than Floyd. Moreover the fight Pacquiao vs Hatton was named Ring Magazine Knockout of the Year 2009!

Against JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
In this case everything was different and it has no meaning to compare the two boxers through the Compubox Statistics because Mayweather faced Juan Manuel Marquez just once, in 2009, dominating the bout and winning via unanimous decision (120-107, 119-108, 118-109) while Pacquiao fought four times against the Mexican: drawing the first bout (=Pacquiao vs Marquez I), winning the second (=Pacquiao vs Marquez II) and the third bouts (=Pacquiao vs Marquez III), but in the final one the Filipino was defeated via knockout (=Pacquiao vs Marquez IV). But the truth is that also in the second and third fights Pac-Man always struggled against Marquez; however you have to know that Mayweather vs Marquez was scheduled as a welterweight bout (147 lbs, 66.7 kg) but the Mexican had never fought above the 135-pound lightweight limit before.

Against SHANE MOSLEY
Floyd Mayweather Jr | Manny Pacquiao
CompuBox Statistics | Mayweather def. Mosley UD12 | Pacquiao vs Mosley UD12 |
Year | 2010 | 2011 |
punches thrown | 477 | 727 |
punches landed | 208 (44%) | 224 (31%) |
jabs thrown | 210 | 374 |
jabs landed | 85 (40%) | 47 (13%) |
power punches thrown | 267 | 353 |
power punches landed | 123 (46%) | 177 (50%) |
punches thrown x round | 39,75 | 60,58 |
punches landed x round | 17,33 | 18,66 |
punches “eaten” x round | 7,6 | 5,5 |
Both Mayweather and Pacquiao landed around 200 punches against Mosley but Manny’s volume of punches was also in this case very high and surprisingly ‘Sugar’ Shane found an easier target in Floyd than in the Filipino, probably thanks to Pacquiao’s odd angles and unpredictable footwork.
Against MIGUEL COTTO
Floyd Mayweather Jr | Manny Pacquiao
CompuBox Statistics | Mayweather vs Cotto UD12 | Pacquiao vs Cotto TKO12 |
Year | 2012 | 2009 |
punches thrown | 687 | 780 |
punches landed | 179 (26%) | 336 (43%) |
jabs thrown | 305 | 220 |
jabs landed | 51 (17%) | 60 (27%) |
power punches thrown | 382 | 560 |
power punches landed | 128 (34%) | 276 (49%) |
punches thrown x round | 57,25 | 65 |
punches landed x round | 14,91 | 28 |
punches “eaten” x round | 8,75 | 14,33 |
Against a strong puncher like Miguel Cotto both Mayweather and Pacquiao were able to use their best weapons: Floyd controlled the fight with his jab and exceptional defense while Manny displayed his blazing speed but also his powerful punches although smaller than the Puerto Rican.
After all this numbers and statistics, who do you think is the favourite, Mayweather or Pacquiao? Let us know in the comments section.

I for one don’t care if this fight happens or not.
It is at minimum 5 years to late. Manny needs to retire because he is NOT the same “I want to kill” fighter.
BUT here is a WHAT IF that I said 6 years ago.
WHAT IF MANNY PAC. never came forward?
I’m interested in that fight even now, but I think the interest is way overblown. Anyway, if it’s good for boxing, let’s go :)
Put your money where your mouth is. Money talk & BS walks. Bet big on Floyd so you lose big.
Mayweather should have taken up running half marathons with his left shoulder in front of his nose. Watch him run, even form someone who is well past his best. This fight is a joke and proves that the public wouldn’t know quality boxing from MMA.
