The former interim Wba Mw and current Ibo super-Mw champion Chris Eubank Jr entered this fight with a pro boxing record of 25-1-0 (19 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.2 super middleweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Gilberto Ramirez). He suffered his only loss when he faced Billy Joe Saunders in 2014 (via split decision, Saunders vs Eubank Jr), since then he has won seven bouts beating Renold Quinlan (=Eubank Jr vs Quinlan) and Arthur Abraham in 2017 (=Eubank vs Abraham).
His opponent, the undefeated Avni Yildirim, has a perfect record of 16-0-0 (10 knockouts) and he entered as the No.10 in the same weight class. He has also fought twice in 2017 winning over Aliaksandr Sushchyts and Marco Antonio Periban (=Yildirim vs Periban). Chris Eubank Jr vs Avni Yildirim is the quarter final of the World Boxing Super Series super-Mw tournament and it is valid for the IBO World super middleweight title (Eubank’s second defense). a short and painful struggle for the Turk
Short, sharp and fast…Eubank is on his way…upwards and onward.
Short, sharp and fast…the Turks experience of the night.
Eubank probably has the fastest hands in the SM division. Yildirim is a poor version of Abraham, so Eubank was more than ready for this one.
Yes, good matchmaking by Sr. He knew exactly what kind of fighter to feed to his buzzsaw-in-training.
Who do you like in Groves-Eubank Jr., Olivier?
Thanks for asking! Both fighters are about the same age, have the same number of fights to their records. But unlike Eubank Jr., Groves went through some very tough wars, so on one hand he’s shown great resilience but on the other hand, he might be “older” than Eubank Jr.. Eubank Jr. has more boxing skills, more speed. I’d say Eubank Jr. by UD. What do you think?
Yes, Groves is older from road and rust. From that point of view, freshness has to favor Eubank Jr., who’s been slowly guided through easy fights since his one loss to Billy Joe Saunders.
Experience, craft, boxing IQ, power and body size will favor the champion, in my view. Volume punching madness and supernatural stamina will favor the challenger. It’s a fight between an architect and a tornado. ;-)
Now, that would go badly for most architects, but I think Groves will be building a bunker for the fight. When Chris sells out on those 15-20 punch flurries, he won’t be standing in front of him like other Eubank Jr. victims. He’ll be off to the side waiting for the storm to subside and then emerge and KABOOM, heh heh.
Anyway, he’d better hope it goes that way. I like your UD guess, but I won’t be surprised by any outcome!
Eubank Jr. threw about 21 punches in the sequence leading to the KO (starting with the body shot from the ropes). Impressive! To be sure Yildirim is a plodder there to be hit, but you can’t write off the ferocity, volume and accuracy in the winner. They kept the Turkish killer in a defensive posture. Maybe 2018 will finally see him in with bigger names.
This is what I don’t like about European referees, too eager to stop fights. Imagine if a European ref officiated Corrales V Castillo 1. He would’ve stopped it before it became interesting.
How is that a sign of him being a “European referee”?
I don’t know about that. I often think stoppages are too early, but not this one. Look at the guy’s eyes when he gets hit with that last punch and goes down. He’s knocked out. No way he was getting up and ready to fight again within ten seconds. The ref saw that and called it. You can even see this was right when he was helped up and still stumbling back to his corner well past 10 seconds. Pretty clear KO imo.
Eh? the fella would of been potentially cabbaged if he could of even got to his feet.
I should admit that he was the better boxer but I totally dislike his arrogance which fully reassembled the one displayed by his father in the past. The Turkish didn’t care much of properly defending himself and pay the price against a very fast boxer.
PLOD, PLOD, PLOD, CLONK!
PLOD, PLOD, PLOD! CLONK!!
