2001 best BOXING fight – Micky Ward vs Emanuel Augustus – full fight Video

Review: 2001-07-13, we had rated this fight four stars but after watching it again, thanks to the comments of “Cleming81” and “mattsnow81”, we have changed our rating in five (on February 6, 2015) because Micky Ward vs Emanuel Augustus was an absolute war thanks to a tremendous pace and some amazing exchanges in which both boxers showed huge heart (in the comments you can see how we rate it round by round).
Micky Ward, one of the most popular boxers despite not being very technical, entered this fight with a professional boxing record of 36-10-0 (27 knockouts) while his opponent, Emanuel Augustus Burton, had not an exceptional record, 24-17-4 (12 knockouts) and close his career with 38 victories, 34 defeats and 6 draws but he faced some of the best boxers in those years: John John Molina, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Carlos Wilfredo Vilches, David Diaz, Ruslan Provodnikov, etc. This bout has been the Ring Magazine fight of the year of 2001, but there were other three exciting battles in that year that we rated with five stars: De La Hoya vs Gatti, Wonjongkam vs Tunacao, Pacquiao vs Ledwaba. Review: 2001-04-07, Marco Antonio Barrera vs Naseem Hamed was probably the most anticipated fight of 2001, two great boxing champions, both very spectacular. Barrera had a record of 52 wins and 3 losses (two with Junior Jones and one against Erik Morales, bout named fight of the year of 2000) while Prince Naseem Hamed still had a perfect record: 35 fights with no defeats. The two boxers hated each others in fact during the fight there are some improprieties, but it was one of the most exciting fights of 2001. Watch the video!

Review: 2001-06-23, Kostya Tszyu vs Oktay Urkal was one of the best boxing fights of 2001. Tszyu was the world champion for both WBA and WBC light welterweight division and he faced Oktay Urkal, at his first attempt to win a world title (he was the EBU European champion). However Urkal, that had never lost in 28 matches, proved to be a tough fighter in fact Kostya Tszyu vs Oktay Urkal was a great and balanced fight. Watch the video!

Review: 2001-05-05, valid for the WBO light heavyweight title, Dariusz Michalczewski vs Alejandro Lakatos was certainly one of the best boxing fights of 2001. Both boxers had never lost until that day, but Michalczewski had much more experience, being older than five years and especially because he had 43 professional fights while Lakatos only 15. Review: 2001-05-12, Felix Trinidad vs William Joppy has certainly been one of the best boxing fights of 2001. Tito Trinidad still had a spotless record, with 39 victories in 39 fights and he was at the top of his career, having already beaten boxers such as Fernando Vargas, Oscar De La Hoya and Pernell Whitaker; Joppy, instead, had lost once (against Julio Cesar Green, who then won in the rematch) and had a respectable record of 32 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw. Felix Trinidad vs William Joppy was valid for the WBA middleweight title. Watch the video!

Saturday, February 19 is scheduled one of the most spectacular fight of 2011: Fernando Montiel vs Nonito Donaire. Both boxers have not any lost in many years, Montiel since 2006, while Donaire has only one defeat of ten years ago (his second professional fight). They are two boxers very spectacular with many ko, Fernando Montiel is the number one of the bantam divsion (boxrec’s ranking), Nonito Donaire instead is at number four, but could use his age (3 years younger) and has also few centimeters more in height and reach. The fight between Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire is valid for the WBC and WBO bantamweight title and it will be broadcast on HBO and Hungary Sport 1.

Saturday 5 March, in California, the Golden Boy Promotions has organized a boxing event focused on a fight that promises to be spectacular: Saul Alvarez vs Matthew Hatton. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is probably the most talented youth of the world professional boxing: Alvarez is 20 years old and has already a record of 35 wins (26 KO) and no losses (1 draw), in the welterweight division he is already among the top 10, boxrec puts it in sixth place, but in the first five there are names like Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, Andre Berto and Jan Zaveck. His opponent is Matthew Hatton, brother of the famous Ricky, that in recent years has improved a lot and he is the EBU (European) welterweight champion. Alvarez and Hatton, Saturday, March 5, will fight for the WBC Silver light middleweight title.

Review:2001-06-23, Manny Pacquiao vs Lehlohonolo Ledwaba was the first fight of Pacquiao in the USA and was certainly one of the best fight of 2001. Manny Pacquiao was 22 years old and had a record of 32 wins and 2 losses (with Torrecampo in 1996 and Singsurat in 1999) and that day against Ledwaba, he fought for the IBF super bantamweight title. Review: 2001-03-02, the fight between Pongsaklek Wonjongkam and Malcolm Tunacao is not the best fight of the year since it is too short, but the first round it is definitely the best round of boxing of 2001. On March 2, 2001, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam was not even 23 years old, but he had a record of 38 wins and 2 defeats, while Tunacao had only 12 fights, but with no loss. Review: 2001-03-24, Oscar De La Hoya vs Arturo Gatti, for us, was the fight of the year of 2001. De La Hoya, nine months before, had lost against Shane Mosley and absolutely needed a win to move closer to a world title, Gatti, instead, did not suffer any loss in the two previous years. Oscar De La Hoya and Arturo Gatti were two boxers very technical and spectacular that could not give us an exciting fight. Watch the video!
