Review: 2013-08-04, fantastic muay thai fight with three knockdowns and some amazing wild exchanges, but both fighters showed also some beautiful and effective clinch techniques. Unfortunately the final of the fight between Bovy and Chainoi was not as exciting as the whole bout if not it could be a real candidate for Muay Thai Fight of the Year 2013 and could get five stars, but Bovy vs Chainoi still remains a must-see! Bovy Sor Kor Suhaigym (red trunks) entered this fight with a professional muay thai record of 65-14-2 while Chainoi Worawut (blue trunks) has an official record of 50-10-0. Bovy vs Chainoi was selected as one of the top five bouts in contention for Channel 7 Stadium fight of the year 2013 (award won by Satanfaa Sagami vs Chokpreecha Gor Sagunchuea, fight we rated three stars). Review: 2014-02-01, very exciting and tough fight with some brutal and wild exchanges (UFC Fight of the Night): Jamie Varner vs Abel Trujillo is definitely one of the best mma fights of the year and it gets four stars (it could be also a candidate for “Fight of the Year” honors and get five stars if there are no better fights in 2014). The former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner entered this fight with a record of 21-8-1 (85% finishing rate) and he is ranked as the No.38 lightweight in the world, he fought just once in 2013 losing to Gleison Tibau.
His opponent, Abel Trujillo, has a record of 11-5-0 (63% finishing rate) and he entered as the No.56 in the same weight class, in 2013 he suffered his last defeat against #9 lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov but seven months later he defeated Roger Bowling. Varner vs Trujillo is on the undercard of Renan Barao vs Urijah Faber 2 – UFC 169. Watch the video and rate this fight!
Review: 2014-01-24, exciting fight thanks to a great start in which both fighters went to the canvas: the fight between Thomas Williams Jr and Cornelius White is the first bout of the year that gets four stars; it could also be a candidate for Round of the Year 2014. The undefeated Thomas Williams Jr entered this fight with a perfect record of 15-0-0 (10 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.23 light heavyweight in the world while Cornelius White has an official record of 21-2-0 (16 KOs=76%) and he entered as the No.22 in the same weight class, his only defeats, both by tko, came to Don George in 2011 and to Sergey Kovalev in his last fight last year. Williams Jr vs White is valid for the vacant WBO NABO light heavyweight title. Watch the video and rate this fight!
Review: 2013-12-10, two different fighters with a diverse style of fighting: on the one hand the stocky Hiroya, more explosive and keeping a high pace, on the other hand the long-limbed Liubchenko with a more traditional muay thai style. The result was an exciting fight with some nice elbows, good pace and two fantastic knockdowns…Hiroya vs Igor Liubchenko is one of the best muay thai fights of 2013, it gets four stars! Igor Liubchenko ranked as the No.17 super lightweight in the world, entered the fight with a record of 23-2-0 while Hiroya had a record of 25-9-0. Hiroya vs Liubchenko is on the undercard of Buakaw Banchamek vs Enriko Kehl – MAX Muay Thai 5. Watch the video!
Review: 2013-12-07, there is a good news and a bad news…we start with the good one: the second part of Silva vs Hunt was simply amazing, one of toughest battle ever, everything you could want from a candidate for Fight of the Year! But now the bad news: we usually rate the complete fight and the first part was not so exciting with both fighters throwing just a few shots and in such cases we can’t give more than four stars; Antonio Silva and Mark Hunt were awarded “UFC Fight of the Night” honors. Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva (18-5-0, 89% finishing rate) entered as the No.4 heavyweight in the world while Mark Hunt (9-8-0, 67% ko/tko victory rate – he has never won by submission) entered as the No.9 (currently the #1 in this weight division is Cain Velasquez). ‘Bigfoot’ Silva vs Hunt is the main event of UFC Fight Night 33; they also faced each other a second time on November 15, 2015 (=Mark Hunt vs Antonio Silva 2). Review: 2013-11-23, very exciting fight thanks to an aggressive start, one knockdown and some wild exchanges in which both fighters exchanged shot for shot showing a solid chin and a big heart: Carl Froch vs George Groves is one of the best boxing fights of the year and it gets four stars (but we hope for a rematch in 2014). Carl Froch (31-2-0, 22 KOs) entered as the No.2 super middleweight in the world while the undefeated George Groves (19-0-0, 15 KOs=79%) entered as the No.6 (currently the #1 in this weight division is Andre Ward). Froch vs Groves is valid for the WBA and IBF super middleweight titles; they also faced each other a second time on May 31, 2014 (=Froch vs Groves 2). Watch the video!
Review: 2013-10-18, good kicks, heavy knees and two knockdowns, this could be a very good fight, but not in this case…because after two rounds, Petchartchai Chaorai-Oi (red shorts) and Jemsak Sakburiram start an amazing back and forth battle: both fighters unload impressive elbows and wild punches in what might be named “the best muay thai round of the year”; probably this could happen only in Thailand or with a blind referee because it seems more a slaughter than a fight. But a candidate for muay thai Fight of the Year 2013 should have also a spectacular and unexpected ending…take a look! Both Petchartchai Chaorai-Oi and Jemsak Sakburiram are not in the top of the rankings and unfortunately we don’t know their record. Petchartchai vs Jemsak was held at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium (Bangkok, Thailand). Watch the video!
Review: 2013-10-19, Mike Alvarado vs Ruslan Provodnikov was a really exciting fight as we expected. Alvarado came off three consecutive spectacular fights: two fights of the year candidate as Alvarado vs Herrera and Rios vs Alvarado 1 in 2012 and a great battle against Brandon Rios in their second fight, but also the Russian boxer came off the candidate for Fight of the Year 2013, a very controversial defeat against Timothy Bradley…
In this fight Provodnikov was the aggressor but Alvarado likes toe-to-toe fights and exchanging shot for shot, so the result was an action packed fight with also two knockdowns and a “touching finish” with the winner in tears hugging his mother: Alvarado vs Provodnikov is definitely one of the best boxing fights of 2013, four stars! Mike Alvarado (34-1-0, 23 KOs) entered as the No.4 light welterweight in the world while Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2-0, 15 KOs) entered as the No.6 (currently the #1 in this weight division is Danny Garcia). Alvarado vs Provodnikov is valid for the WBO light welterweight title (Alvarado’s first defense). Watch the video!
Review: 2013-10-19, the final part of the fight between Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez was simply astonishing: brutal exchanges, blood, nonstop pace and big heart, so it could be a perfect candidate for Mma Fight of the Year 2013 but unfortunately the first part was “only” a very good one and not epic. For this reason Melendez vs Sanchez (UFC Fight of the Night) gets four stars and not five, but we would like to see a rematch since it was also a very close bout. Gilbert Melendez (21-3-0, 57% finishing rate) entered as the No.3 lightweight in the world while Diego Sanchez (24-5-0, 63% finishing rate) entered as the No.10 (currently the #1 in this weight division is Anthony Pettis). Melendez vs Sanchez is on the undercard of Cain Velasquez vs Junior dos Santos 3 – UFC 166. Watch the video!
