The former interim Ww and 2013 FILA 77 kg No-Gi grappling world champion Colby Covington entered this fight with a mma record of 14-1-0 (50% finishing rate) and he is ranked as the No.4 welterweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Kamaru Usman). He suffered his only loss when he faced Warlley Alves in 2015, since then he has won six bouts defeating Dong Hyun Kim (Kim vs Covington), Demian Maia (Demian Maia vs Colby Covington) and Rafael dos Anjos in his last three (Rafael dos Anjos vs Colby Covington).
His opponent, the former Ufc Ww champion Robbie Lawler, has an official record of 28-13-0 (75% finishing rate) and he entered as the No.17 in the same weight class but he won just one out of his last four bouts, against Donald Cerrone in 2017 (Lawler vs Cerrone). After this bout he has lost to Rafael dos Anjos (Robbie Lawler vs Rafael dos Anjos) and Ben Askren (Robbie Lawler vs Ben Askren). Covington vs Lawler is the main event of UFC on ESPN 5. you know im surprised at how technically good he is he has great timing honestly this is the first time I’ve seen him fight and he’s actually as good as his ranking
His wrestling is excellent, but his striking at a base level is very mediocre. Thing is, he has freakish cardio and his chain fighting is superb. He never gave RL time to set or space to fire. He’d strike, TD, strike, TD and each time RL would have to reset. He also executed beautifully by wearing RL out in rd 1 with TDs. He is basically Diaz but with wrestling instead of bjj.
yeah his striking is not great, but tight and his timing is great while Robbie was thinking of throwing a punch Colby already had thrown 4 or 5. not much pop in it but it blends well with his style of wrestling I got to say the guy if he fights like that all the time is pretty exciting for a wrestler it’s funny you compare him with Diaz I was thinking Diaz with a bit of Randy Couture his dirty boxing to grappling style where he starts in striking range goes into clench but ends on ground against fence he really knows how to use his space
thanks for the upload boys
Can we check Colby for EPO? Seriously Robbie was gassed by rd 2. Tony Ferg is an EPO user, i wonder if Colby has freakish genetics or if he gets a bit o help from some pro cyclists? Great fighter, terrible politics.
WOW after watching him fight I think he would out work Tyron Woodley Tyron thinks to much about his punches and take downs and Colby he just throws he’s got a nice flow and pace I honestly think he’s gonna have to be one to watch from now on lol his cringe had me sleeping on him
Colby def earned that win, so good for him. His wrestling is a lot better than I expected–on par with Usman and Woodley. Doesn’t have the power of Woodley, so I think Tyron would KO him, IF and only IF Woodley came to fight. I can’t stand Dana White, but he’s right about one thing with Woodley: if we could work the remote control on Woodley, he’d be unbeatable, but he hesitates for some reason. I think Usman takes Colby because he’s a little more powerful, but that Colby gas tank is impressive.
Too bad Lawler wasn’t able to punish Colby’s lead leg a little. CC had no real reason to fear anything other than Lawler’s left, which he did, admirably. This is the kind of fight that shows how small a difference there is between champs and former champs who are still absolutely lethal but have lost some speed, power, or develop a glass chin. Lawler’s recent decline reminds me of The IceMan’s final fights. He looked so good, so many time, only to get revealed by someone a little better than him. Too bad.
