2 Star RatingReview by AllTheBestFights.com: 2018-09-08, some good exchanges between Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter but it is not enough to get three stars: it gets two.

The former world champion in two different weight classes Danny Garcia entered this fight with a boxing record of 34-1-0 (20 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.6 welterweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Terence Crawford). He suffered his only loss when he faced Keith Thurman last year (via split decision Keith Thurman vs Danny Garcia), after this bout he came back to win against Brandon Rios in 2018 (Danny Garcia vs Brandon Rios).
His opponent, the former Ibf Ww champion Shawn Porter, has an official record of 28-2-1 (17 knockouts) and he entered as the No.4 in the same weight class. He also lost to Keith Thurman, but via unanimous decision and in 2016 (4-stars fight, Thurman vs Porter), then he has won over Andre Berto (Porter vs Berto) and Adrian Granados (Shawn Porter vs Adrian Granados). Garcia vs Porter is valid for the vacant WBC World welterweight title. Watch the video and rate this fight!

  1. Nice battle. Garcia had his moments, but Porter outworked and outclassed him. Garcia now becomes gatekeeper, while those dorsal fins circling Porter are Spence and Crawford coming for the belt!

    • Using the word outclass to describe Porter’s performance is quite a stretch. The best I had Porter doing was a draw….Otherwise, I had it 7-5 DSG. Shawn missed a lot of shots. Particularly on the inside during flurries. Danny touched him w/ the harder cleaner shots IMO.

      • You are one of Danny’s cheerleaders so that’s only natural you would have had him winning or a draw. Your boy lost period. Boxing isn’t only judged on clean punching. It’s also based on effective agressiveness, ring generalship and defense. And imo Shawn was way better at all the other aspects. I had it either 116-112 or 115-113, but a DRAW or a win for Danny is ridiculous and you know it.

      • True that I had Danny winning 117/113 with 2 rounds even rounds 9,10, and 12 Danny won it running away also Danny’s punches were hurting him you could hear the punches from living room it really is too bad that announcers who sit next to judges can possibly influence a fight.

      • The early rounds do indeed show what you claim for Danny. I see why many want to give it to him on his sharp, heavy counters, which looked good. But there’s more to scoring than that, thankfully, or Danny would be P4P #1.

By the midpoint Porter is controlling the pace, landing in volume and befuddling his man. This is because he’s simply more creative and capable in the ring — he has a deeper toolset. Garcia’s dangerous, but smart agile fighters will find a way against him. He should stay well clear of Spence and Crawford.

        • I suppose it depends upon who’s judging. Bc Danny basically employed the same tactic as thurman in trying to sharp-shoot & pick porter off. I honestly don’t see Shawn as having more ability than Danny. They’re about even in my book. I thought Shawn had a good workrate & pushed the pace. I thought Danny owned the first portion of the fight. Where Shawn is more athletic.I believe danny is more intelligent & perhaps even more smooth & measured in his ability. Now that I think about it…Kell Brook did the same as well. Simply remained calm…picked him off…When shawn bulled in wildly..simply tied him up. Since both guys are Hayman fighters I believe the puppet masters decided to reward Shawn in this one. DSG has had his share of gifts &/or controversial decisions. Porter is a class guy in & out of the ring. He always entertains…share the wealth. The Thurman rematch is on the horizon…as well as a Spence bout…So…I’m kool w/ the vickie. But from a strictly sports perspective…I thought Shawn hit a love of gloves & was getting picked off & timed well or decently by the harder/sharper shots. I always enjoy your analysis bruv…which is why I typically respond to you & engage in conversation. Glad you’re here. & thanks to the site for giving us the platform.

You make a nice case for Danny and I don’t think you’re wrong. This being the madness of boxing, it’s even more fun when we disagree. :-)

Can’t argue at all with your comparison to the Brook fight. Sharp guys like Danny and Kell live for guys who come flying in. I think Porter has improved since then–maybe he’s just a bit better at feinting before he pounces. You could see him vibrating as he got ready to charge against Danny; against Brook, he just came cruising in and–whamo–paid for it.

Who do you like in the Porter-Thurman rematch, then? Assuming Thurman does ever get back in the ring (I really hope so), and assuming he’s able to get his old form back.

          • TRue indeed. Shawn was up for this fight. He was very spry & Springy. I’d have to give the edge to Porter. I don’t think Thurman’s timing & just overall reflexes & conditioning will be able to help him pull awy at the end like the last bout. I also think he’d give Spence some diff. Spence is a determined fighter who is always well conditioned. But I wonder how he’d fair when pushed constantly. He has a superb jab. I don’t think he moves his head particularly well. & his feet are a bit heavy. So I’m curious how he’d look late vs someone on him trying to smother his work.

  2. Danny “Clutch and Hold” Garcia. Holding, grabbing, clutching, and hugging lost you the fight Danny Boy.
