Great heavyweight fight! Really enjoyed it, even though the level of action was intermittent. But anyway, heavyweight world title fights of this magnitude will always give me the chills!
Ortiz is the best fighter of the two, no doubt about it. He’s a good all-around boxer. Still, both fighters become very awkward and clumsy when things heat up. Wilder only knows how to throw decent jabs and straight rights and needed to be lucky on landing one of those to make a difference in this fight. And that’s what exactly what happened! Both fighters looked nervous in the early rounds. Ortiz took the lead with his better abilities, until Wilder got lucky for the first time and caught Ortiz for the KD. Right after that, Ortiz came back strong up to a point at which the belt was within reach but Wilder got lucky for the second time: the bell saved him (and may I add the referee who could have stopped the fight near the end of the 7th). Then it took two rounds but Wilder was able to get back into the fight, but Ortiz was still controlling the action. At this point, both Ortiz and Wilder looked very tired and Wilder was able to seize his second big opportunity and finished the job. Wilder showed he was able to overcome adversity and that he’s got a big heart. However, the only thing I find amazing about this guy is his punching power, but that I did already know.
Looking foward to see how good Joshua will look against Parker!

Loved the fight — too bad for Ortiz it didn’t occur two or three years ago. Wilder proves what we knew about him, and probably will never change. He has great weapons and they more than make up for limited boxing ability. This makes his fights even more exciting to watch.

One more thing. Ortiz is amazingly fast for his age and covers distance so well and subtly. His boxing skills are beautiful, all the little moves and blocks and movements. He’s as fast if not faster than wilder in certain movements.

Wilder is very very dangerous and he has proved it but he was also lucky as he could recover when hurted. He had a strange check to the eye just to give him time. Anyway he is stronger than Ortiz now. 3 years ago I think Ortiz should have been world champion but nobody allowed him to have the fight he deserved. Credoit to Wilder for taking such a risk.
Amen credit to both guys. Wilder same mistakes as always, chin beyond knee, looping and leaning, dropping right hand and jab after throwing, mediocre footwork even though he moved a lot it was to retreat and match ortiz not for setups or positioning, always pushed back to the ropes and many times off balance. But despite all this his fast reflexes, speed and power got him by as always and thats ok thats him he has that as his featureset by default. Always improving but rather slowly. Ortiz masterful boxer who got tired after missing his golden opportunity like klitschko with aj. If the ortiz who fougt kayode or jennings would have fought tonight we might have had a different outcome. Knew something like this was gonna happen, had a gut feeling.

Pissed off over “just a few” things
(1) wilders jab non existent probably scared ortiz will counter over it, and other than the right hand he had nothing. His boxing skills are supposed to improve by now under mark breland but they are worse than ever. All that talk of him using angles speed and movement, where were they? Seriously where is his much vaunted movement? At this rate parker and aj move more than him. Joshua finishes him in 6. Easy.
(2) both judges and ref clearly paid off with all 3 identical scores at time of stoppage in favor of wilder and that bogus 20seconds stop when he was hurt wtf?? That was some seriously obvious corrupt sh*t right there and ppl retweeting d*mb sh*t like ice bucket challenge instead of really important things like such avid corruption in sports nowadays is what pisses me off in the world today.
(3) ortiz had lulls in his sharpness, stopped moving his head and paid for it the hard way. He had lulls in using his footwork and angles, and double/triple jab. His variety was also non existent, his uppercut nowhere to be seen. Seemed too respectful of wilder / maybe even scared to get on the inside, move his upper body and make himself a small target, and let go with a body shot or an uppercut hook combo here and there to break down wilder. And fall back and repeat. It seemed like he was too intent on working long term traps and setups that kept failing against a fast twitch fst reflexed wilder. Instead of focusing on getting just a bit closer to get right leverage on straights and land a 2/3 punch combos which wilder wouldnt let him have by matching ortizs movements step for step. By staying on the outside instead of the inside more often he really played to deontays strengths because his most dangerous punch is the super extended straight cross which is what hurt ortiz in all occasions. On the inside as paulie remarked he is ironically not as dangerous. Didnt punch in between wilders shots as often and as fast as id hoped he would, again could be the age. Master boxer got too comfortable with the easier less dangerous work on the outside and didnt push the ko when wilder was clearly hurt. If rematch happens, some of these points need to be seen to.
(4) ortiz should have pushed through the tiredness in rd8 man, wilder was hurt bad it was so obvious even if he denied it. Same as klit with aj, i guess when you are 40 you cant do it, maybe getting tired at 40 feels double or triple getting tired when you are 20? Ouch.
Still a great fight, not sure if rematch or whyte next before joshua since if aj wins they are planning one more fight with miller before wilder. Makes sense to me, aj had only 20 fights. But ortiz rematch would be great albeit dangerous, doubt wilder would entertain it after that dangerous 7th rd. He can always fight guys like whyte miller ortiz etc
I thought ortiz was way ahead on scorecards. Well you never know in america. As usual. Kovalev now ortiz. You need to KO the american star to win. Ward, Wilder, Floyd it is a shame.
Great fight tho. Wilder finally found courage to face top fighter in Ortiz. I would love to see somebody face Povetking. As for Ortiz everybody dont even talk about him not to start discussion.

Deontay was really lucky and all his weakness totally exposed. He was totally out boxed by Ortiz and just winning round 5 before the fight was stopped. I like him but, in my opinion, his self confidence is low and he hasn’t a plan B to fight against a qualify and skillful southpaw as Ortiz is.
I’m very sad about Ortiz who did a very intelligent fight till he was caught by the wild punches lunched by Deontay. He was able to out class and almost fully neutralize Deontay just by using his good jabbing skills and rotating always counterclockwise while sustained a full time aggression carried out during the length of the fight. In round 7 he almost demolished Deontay who walked back to his corner visible affected. In my opinion just Ortiz deserved the victory which was taking by a boxer who posses a colossal reach advantage and demonstrated to have only one tool available, his outstanding punching power. His chin is very good too. However, after this fight I truly believe that Deontay still isn’t competition for Joshua who would take him for a walk in the park if such a fight occurs in the near future.
I agree partially. I liked Ortiz a lot too but he was tired ( he is old and was very inactive in the last two years) but the statements about Joshua is too extreme. Till now joshua is waiting and waiting postponing wilder. He has only one sure advantage: age. And he is using it… the match, now, would be very open. Both have some flaws and are terrific punchers. In 1-2 years i think deontay could be weaker and AJ can still grow.
blackbird014: Don’t get me wrong, I like Deontay but I found that his self confidence is a liability since it decays very easy and fast every time he fight with an skilled rival. Anyhow, I recognize he always managed and got his path to victory in the hard way. I’m quite happy with him because is representing our continent however, he may be relaying too much in his powerful punches and ignoring that his boxing skills require immediately improvements. In my opinion this another of his liabilities. Ortiz shown to be much better than him in this matter and because his age he didn’t success in this fight. A younger boxer with similar technical proficiency than Ortiz would put him in real travel.
I mentioned Joshua because he is “trouble”. In terms of reach (no good for Deontay) and punching power they are almost equalized. But, in my opinion, Joshua’s confidence isn’t affected during the fights, he is younger and in top of it he is a better technician.
But we saw from deontay what we wanted that aj already gave us, him in a dogfigt and. Proving he a warrior and he for real. And as for ortiz, he paid for every time he lulled away in his sharpness. Round 5? Static, no head movement, hand too far down to block. The beginning of the end in rd10- search the slow mo highlights – he coming in with his usual 3/4 jab combo but head too close to centreline instead of sideways and reaching a bit. Too tired so got too eager and agressive for a finish, pushing for it before he completely gasses. And really you cant blame him there, the long inactivity and age sure played their part. Deontay sidestepped, albeit a bit off balance, and delivered the first wobbling right hand. The boy is learning setting traps and countering on counters, despite his obvious fundamental flaws.

Hey just FYI I think it’s worth mentioning that the alleged full fight video for Wilder vs Ortiz is actually a 1 minute video that starts deep into the fight. ..I wad pretty unhappy when I realized that, it being my first time trying you watch the fight
