The undefeated Wbc super-Bw champion Rey Vargas entered this fight with a perfect record of 29-0-0 (22 KOs=76%) and he is ranked as the No.12 super bantamweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Guillermo Rigondeaux). In his last three bouts he has beat Alexis Boureima Kabore (=Vargas vs Kabore), Alexander Munoz (=Vargas vs Munoz) and Gavin McDonnell (=Vargas vs McDonnell).
His opponent, Ronny Rios, has a boxing record of 28-1-0 (13 knockouts) and he entered as the No.9 in the same weight class. He suffered his only loss when he faced Robinson Castellanos in 2014 (=Rios vs Castellanos), since then he has won five bouts beating Daniel Noriega in 2017. Rey Vargas vs Ronny Rios is valid for the WBC World Super Bantamweight title (Vargas’ first defense); undercard of Miguel Cotto vs Yoshihiro Kamegai. Watch the video and rate this fight!

Official highlights
One of my favorite fights in 2017. Vargas is in control, cracking unbelievable shots with those bullwhip arms. But Rios can’t be counted out, and the seesawing balance in the later rounds is really a pleasure to watch. Both men deserve the highest praise for an intelligent action fight.
If Vargas can go up to 130, a fight with Loma would be amazing.
Nice fight which I enjoyed very much but with an abysmal physical differences between these two fighters. Vargas reach advantage was noticeable and his punching speed amazing. Most of the times, just by extending his left arm he was able to keep Rios at the proper distance to connect his right punch immediately after. I was surprised that he wasn’t able to knock down Rios which is extremely resilient and aggressive. He was really brave and put a good fight in spite of knowing it was a lost cause.
I saw the fight as you did, Tango.
Surprisingly, Boxrec says Rios has a longer reach than Vargas!
Rios 180cm http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/473908
Vargas 179cm http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/542148
If these numbers are accurate, it says something about Vargas’s unusual body. His height and build don’t prepare us for what he can do. He can throw fast hard combinations from range (where he prefers) or close-up, making him a complete threat. On HBO, Roy Jones compared Vargas to “Hitman” Tommy Hearns, high praise indeed.
Vargas did slow in later rounds, as Rios’ body shots took something from him. But mostly, just like you and me, he looked surprised Rios was still standing!
I’d love to see how Loma would handle him. Just avoiding those punches would be like riding a horse into a hail of arrows.
Arjay Cee: You are quite wright since I saw Vargas also slowing down on the last part of fight. Regarding reach advantage I was wrongly assuming that Vargas has more than Rios, to be honest a total surprise.
As you said a fight with Loma would be a PLUS.
