The Wbo super-Fw champion Roman Martinez entered this fight with a professional record of 29-2-3 (17 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.9 super featherweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Javier Fortuna). He suffered his last loss when he faced Mikey Garcia in 2013 (=Garcia vs Martinez), after this bout he has won over Herbert Quartey and Orlando Salido (=Salido vs Martinez I) but then he drew with Salido in their rematch (=Martinez vs Salido II).
His opponent, the 2012 and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist and Wbo Fw champion Vasyl Lomachenko entered this fight with a professional boxing record of 5-1-0 (3 knockouts – but he has an amazing amateur record of 396-1) and he entered as the No.11 featherweight. He lost to Orlando Salido at his second pro bout in 2014 (via split decision, Salido vs Lomachenko), but then he has won four fights beating Gamalier Rodriguez (=Lomachenko vs Rodriguez) and Romulo Koasicha in 2015 (=Lomachenko vs Koasicha). ‘Rocky’ Martinez vs Lomachenko is valid for the WBO World super featherweight title. Great KO, Lomachenko is great to see in the ring. Spins out of clinches, can hit you with a 3 combo then jump like 3 feet out than 2 feet in to jab, etc. The KO was absolutely awesome :)
He is pure artistry in the ring, isn’t he? One of the most agile, creative and explosive fighters to come along since, well, Roy Jones Jr. Can’t wait to see him again.
He says he wants a rematch against Salido! That would be great :) Salido really is one of my favorite boxer too :)
That would be great. Very impressed by Salido last week.
A really good fight which developed as a perfect boxing teaching lesson. It was almost not opportunities for Roman in this fight since from the very beginning was totally out boxed by Vasyl by means of excellent change of angles and because the connection of better and several punch combinations. He has technical proficiency and since he is so accurate in connecting his punches the reasonable strength they carried on are good enough to get a knock out so perfect as the one obtained tonight.
A very good victory considering he was the smaller guy in the ring and coming to this fight from a lower weight category.
This is the KO of the year for me now.
Martinez didn’t know what had happened. I’m sure that will be on high light reels.
Lomachenko just jumped the PFP list in my opinion. Moved up a weight class and fought a guy who still outweighed him by 7 pounds.
Totally out classed him from the start.
He is the example to use when referencing what boxing is. (at least what it should be)
Yeah, I agree. I still cant believe that this guy lost to Salido, but as we know he used all the dirtiest tricks he knew. Blame the referee as well too, for not penalizing the insane amount of low blows, holding, and any dirty wrestling tactic. IMO Salido SHOULD have been DISQUALIFIED that night and the referee permanently SUSPENDED.
Lomachenko is the best pure boxer right now period, probably one of the best boxer I ever seen. This was a flawless boxing lesson by vasyl. That was truly some high tech boxing.
Watch the Salido fight to see his flawless skill.
In this fight he was flawless, In the salido fight, salido was fighting dirty and lomachenko doesn’t have enough punching power to keep salido off him, salido is tough, but I believe he beats salido in a rematch.
He will always look like this vs this level of competition. Loma is many levels above.
Loma is many levels above every boxer in this weight class and featherweight. This guy he beat, beat salido twice.
Styles, the triangle theory has no place. I can see Walters hurting this guy.
True, walters has big power, he would hurt lomachenko if he connects, I think vasyl defense is good enough to avoid walters big shots. How would walters deal with lomachenko speed and movement.
Anthony: Since you know how to appreciate a boxer with real skills, there are many of them that are just fighters (e.g.Salido), please take your time and watch this fight from 1968 in which was involved the great Nicolino Locche (the untouchable).
The video start with a 10 min version but as soon as its completed it will show up the full fight that runs for about 30 min plus.,
Thank you

Thanks for showing me this fight, I never knew about this nicolino guy and I know a lot of boxers, very skill especially defensively. I’m one of the people who appreciates a good technical boxer.
Anthony you are welcome. Locche was one of the best defensive boxer of all the times with an amateur record of 117-5-0. Locche as professional amassed a record of 117-4-14 (14 KOs). As you see just very few knock outs but an amazing record. If you have time read the article I attached here.

This guy’s skills are incredible. When I saw his amateur record- thats almost super human heh. Great display of boxing!!
Lomachenko showed an outstanding performance, just like he always does, great movement, great combos and always keeping his opponent right where he wanted. Martínez never had a chance, he was outboxed and outclassed.
Purses: Lomachenko $850K, Martinez $425K
