3 Star RatingReview by AllTheBestFights.com: 2016-04-23, pretty good fight between Gennady Golovkin and Dominic Wade: it gets three stars.

Both undefeated, the Kazakh Gennady Golovkin entered this fight with a perfect boxing record of 34-0-0 (31 KOs=91%) and he is ranked as the No.2 middleweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez) while his opponent, Dominic Wade, has an official record of 18-0-0 (12 knockouts) and he entered as the No.12 in the same weight class. GGG fought three times last year winning over Martin Murray (=Golovkin vs Murray), Willie Monroe Jr (=Golovkin vs Monroe) and David Lemieux (=Golovkin vs Lemieux) while Wade fought just once beating Sam Soliman (=Soliman vs Wade). Golovkin vs Wade is valid for the WBA, IBF, IBO and interim WBC World middleweight titles. Watch the video and rate this fight!

  1. I had 2$ on Wade winning by KO (I was hoping for a lucky punch) and it would have paid 38$. To cover all my bases, I also bet another measly 2 bucks for a Wade victory by decision.

That was one hell of a disappointment as I feared. I think the ref went a knockdown too far. I am wondering about one thing: does GGG fight mostly bums or do they look like bums because he is just too strong? I lean for the second option. Too strong. What an incredibly talented fighter, he took some of Wade’s punches like it was nothing and put him down with punches that almost looked soft.

Stop marinating the Canelo fight we want to see it NOW!

    • That’s $4 Canelo owes you. He should have been in the ring tonight. Instead this unknown young man was served up as a surrogate, when he deserved the chance to grow in the sport without being destroyed in his 19th professional fight.

I agree we didn’t need the third knockdown. Wade was too brave for his own good, though he did try. It will take either a big puncher or a Mayweather-like evader to get past Gennady at this weight.

Canelo has the punch, but not the cajones, apparently. I think it is also a matter of Golden Boy protecting their last meal ticket. Making Alvarez chump not champ, and Oscar postponer not promoter.

      • Agreed with the first 2 paragraphs of your comments. I think Wade’s value will grow a little bit from being a guy that went up against GGG.

After the first knockdown, bearing in mind my bet, I was like “Get up! Get up!” But not so much after the second one, it was apparent it was over.

I don’t agree Canelo doesn’t have the cojones though, I think he wants to fight anyone. Probably his promoters GB want to see this marinate May-Pac style, which is a shame and not good for boxing.

        • Could be, Matt. If that is true, Canelo is far from his own man. Either way, I agree it’s bad for us.

I’ve read The Ring articles where this so-called “marinating” is discussed as if it were an ingenious promotional strategy. I think it’s double-talk. GGG simply doesn’t have the time remaining to build himself into a Mayweather-level earner. At age 34, time is running out.

My guess is that Golden Boy doesn’t want another fighter wrecked by him and hopes to avoid the fight completely, waiting out Golovkin’s decline or (more likely) his eventual move up in weight to chase bigger fights. If they feed Canelo to him and it all goes south, their last big money-maker at Golden Boy is gone. Who’s gonna keep Oscar in fishnets then, I ask you!

          • Even Daniel Jacobs has announced he has no desire to face GGG until possibly 2018 – to ‘build’ interest in any GGG-Golovkin contest. Not only does such procrastination demonstrate the New Yorker has a far higher opinion of his own ability than fans do – for the moderate Jacobs may well not still be a ‘champion’ in 2018 – yet it strongly supports your view on the contrived ‘marinating’ of such contests being ‘double talk’.

As for Saunders, forget it. For even if the fighter himself may want it (?) – there is no way the perenially overprotective Warren will ever likely hand that WBO title to Golovkin. Not when he can milk it over here for decent money.

          • Well said! It’s pathetic what passes for laurels in our sport when they can be preserved and flaunted without risk. Comparatively, I think of my pops, watching his hard-luck Chicago White Sox all his life — drubbing after drubbing, in fair weather and foul — and yet what marks baseball even in such perennial disappointments is its sane insistence on leagues, schedules, pennants, series…appointed fates. Which are of course also chances for reversal. Wellsprings of hope, however carbonated. ;-)

It can be no accident that in boxing the Great Evader became the highest paid in history!

          • Lol. Your late father sounds more and more like my sort of guy, Arjay (I never did give baseball the fair chance I should have done. Yet it sounds so like cricket – that other bat and ball bastion of routine, hope and civility in an otherwise harsh, uncertain sporting world.

And the much-maligned ‘Money’ has indeed had the last laugh over all.

            .

          • Hmmm the idea that GB wants to avoid GGG COMPLETELY is something I have to disagree with. They will want him if he makes sense $$$$-wise. I always appreciate your opinion Arjay, I may be a little KO spending the whole night up to see Liege Bastogne Liege, a cycling race. Very KO to tell the truth.

      • I didn’t actually watch the ‘fight’, Arjay. But I sure do agree on Canelo. A fighter I initially spoke out for against the critics (and had such high hopes for at 160). But no longer – for he so clearly wants no part of GGG.

        • You sure didn’t miss anything, Barley. Apart from Roy Jones Jr. being in good form as announcer, and a grinning GGG doing his post-fight song and dance (“an awfully cute monster,” as Mrs. Cee says). The look of concern in Wade’s corner, and his own scattered gaze, as he limped back at the bell said it all.

          • Lol. I almost, ALMOST mind, reactivated my $18 per month subscription to Frank Warren’s ‘Box Nation’ to watch Mrs Cee’s ‘awfully cute monster’ (as sharp a description as I have heard) do his thing against poor Wade.

The emgaging Roy Jones notwithstanding – I feel so glad I didn’t. Lol.

    • In this case the IBF ordered GGG to fight Wade as Wade was their No 1 contender. GGG is just streets ahead in terms of relentless aggressive power. A modern day Marvin.

Contrast this with Carl Frampton, who when ordered to fight no 1 contender Rigondeaux by the WBA, Frampton chose to vacate the title that he says he worked so hard to get. That is what boxing doesn’t need anymore – ducking dangerous opponents.

  2. I’m a huge fan of Canelo, but I just don’t think he’ll be able to handle the power either… I’m sure he’ll make into later rounds than Wade, but ultimately, he will lose by KO. The only fighter I would bet on against him that come to mind and there has been interest for, is Andre Ward.

  3. OK Am I the only person who doesn’t want Canelo to fight GGG?
It is a mute point and EVERYONE knows it.
Canelo will never fight GGG unless GGG somehow pulls crazy PPV #’s.

Mattsnow – I think he makes em look that way.
I really thought Wade would fair better than he did. Another agreement on the 3rd knockdown. But also he hadn’t been hit that much so we would scream if it ended with 2.

And Canelo doesn’t have the punch or stamina to fight someone his own size (which is, like Wade, 4 pounds heavier than GGG on average.)

There are only 3 people in the Middleweight division
that GGG should be fighting at this very moment:
    Daniel Jacobs
    B.J. Saunders
    Chris Eubank Jr
(Ievgen Khytrov might turn out to be future worthy opponent but to green right now)

The only one above who I think would fight GGG is maybe Eubank Jr. I think that could possibly be a big fight in the UK. Probably bigger than Saunders. Whom will duck GGG altogether.

Jacobs – well he is a Haymon b*tch so that isn’t going to happen at all.

And I about pissed myself when Kellerman asked GGG about letting Wade hit him. “showing them they have chance. I give them a chance” with a smile.

Golovkin reminds me of David Banner.
All calm, caring and clinical then F! HULK SMASH! once in ring.

  4. Wade had no business being in the ring with Golovkin, everybody knows which fight G should be getting. Canleo, Ward or even Cotto. Otherwise it’s all a joke. Canelo, said he fights everybody, so take the f*cking fight.

  5. Presently there are very few boxers that can put a fight against to GGG who really is a destroying machine. Dominic, with a good boxing record but little power and limited experience, was fully overwhelmed as it was expected. I’m a real fan of Canelo but if he takes the challenge it would be very though for him to succeed because GGG power is really impressive and technically he is quite sound but not as good as Canelo is since GGG mainly relies on his punching power.

  6. GGG – no gangsta bs – no over hype – no egomania – just simple efficient destruction. This guy is untouchable at 160 and no one in the US will fight him. Watch the gymnastics GB go through to avoid getting Canelo anywhere near him.

GGG next move must be to fight in the UK – as there are no US challengers left (who want to try that is)
Too soon for Eubank imho. So Saunders and his WBO belt would be the target – and it will sell. The fight to unite them all. All five tinpot governing body titles in one man’s hands – now that would be something.

If it happens, expect someone to come up with a sixth governing body.

  7. Eubank, Saunders and Jacobs would represent the soup, the main course
and the desert; they would all get eaten by this machine. I also believe that he is not going to fall off the cliff with age. He has more than enough skill to stand still in the ring and still win, he doesn’t need to run like mw. Canello look like the only solid opponent at this weight- bring it on, this would really be boxing.
