3 Star RatingReview by AllTheBestFights.com: 2015-12-29, nice and tough fight between Javier Mendoza and Akira Yaegashi: it gets three stars.

Javier Mendoza entered this fight with a pro boxing record of 24-2-1 (19 KOs=79%) and he is ranked as the No.7 light flyweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Donnie Nietes). He suffered his last defeat when he faced Jorge Guerrero in 2011, since then he has won 11 consecutive fights beating Milan Melindo in his last one (=Melindo vs Mendoza).
His opponent, the former world champion in two different weight classes Akira Yaegashi, has a record of 22-5-0 (12 knockouts) and he entered as the No.10 flyweight. He lost two consecutive bouts in 2014, against Roman Gonzalez (=Yaegashi vs Gonzalez) and Pedro Guevara (=Yaegashi vs Guevara), but he came back to win in 2015 defeating Songseanglek Phosuwangym and Said M Said. Mendoza vs Yaegashi is valid for the IBF World light flyweight title (Mendoza’s second defense); undercard of Naoya Inoue vs Warlito Parrenas. Watch the video and rate this fight!

  2. A fight for 4 starts that really deserves to be watched. Both contenders very aggressive but with a quite different fighting style. Technically speaking the Japanese out boxed Mendoza in spite of being fighting against a southpaw. He was very fast and extremely accurate with his punches fighting with his arms low in a similar style than Sergio Martinez. His lack of power was quite evidently otherwise i honestly believe that Mendoza would never pass the fourth round. Akira won the body punching work also. The volume of punches interchanged by both boxers during the whole fight was incredible and never fade at all. Round 4 the best in terms of body punches and rounds 11 and 12 the more exciting ones. Mendoza was almost knocked down in both of them, he just survived because Akira low pop. Anyhow, Mendoza’s efforts were outstanding because Akira’s eyes were almost fully close at the end of the fight. The judges card were to sided to Akira. In my opinion the closer one was 117-111. The other too much in favor of Akira who really desreves the win.

    • Thank you Christoper for supporting the 4 starts but it was really an exceptional fight and for your comment. The guys really were in incredible physical conditions no doubt about it. I’m surprise that the Akira’s record shown 5 loses, he seems to be much better than that.

  5. The referee reminds me of Austin Powers’ Mini-Me!

Seriously, I definitely agree with my fellow commentators that this needs a 4 stars ratings at least. Very crisp punches from a southpaw-regular confrontation.

I had it 117-111 for Yaegashi. I like how Mendoza showed beautiful sportsmanship after the fight. 3 stars for this fight is an abomination.

    • Matt as usual you are quite right about the sportsmanship showed by Mendoza. It was excellent and to be honest very unusual which means that he fully recognized that Akira was the winner, a real gentleman.
