Thank you ATBF, this is one of my favorite Augustus fight. The bout is a thriller, it is so close I remember I was on the edge of my seat when I watched it live in 2006 :) . Augustus was very entertaining although he didn’t dance at all, for once! He threw punches from every angle and his defense was nice.
Rangel definitely came to fight as the bout was very close and they offered a tremendous show. Thanks to mrgor24 aka George Agor whom I coerced into uploading the fight in good quality :)
Matt you did it again!!!!. Thank you and the host also for bringing such a nice fight.
Don’t forget to rate the fight tango :)
Matt this fight deserves no less than 4 starts. Just 3 doesn’t do full justice
Excellent fight from Augustus as usual. He started slow but closed the fight with a master proficiency. He was really calm on this one and acting too seriously for his boxing drunken style. I really enjoyed it.
I’m so glad you liked it tango! Augustus won fights against boxers with better records than Rangel (he KOd undefeated, 20-0 Terrel Finger in 1999, among others, and outclassed Alex Trujillo and Alfredo Vilches, who both had only one loss.)
Anyway, it is always a treat to see him box and to see people appreciating him :)
It’s always a pleasure to watch an Augustus’ fight, recommended by Mattsnow (who else could it be?!).
Started a bit sluggish for both fighters. Not a technical skills display overall. Augustus didn’t use his feet at all as if he was trying to prove something. No “groovin'” by a very serious Augustus that night.
Amazing 4th round. But my favorite moment, beside the KO, happened in the 6th, when Augustus pushed Rangel against the ropes and then blasted him with a very slick combo: left hook to the body, left uppercut – then a straight right hand on the nose!
Did you guy notice: when Rangel took a knee in the 10th, the ESPN clock stopped! I hope the timekeeper didn’t do the same thing… though it wouldn’t have change the outcome.
Thanks Oliver, nice comment! I think Augustus started slow because he was supposed to fight a right-hander (Emmanuel Clottey) but it was changed to Rangel with 6 days notice. For once Augustus wasn’t the guy entering at the last minute.
Stock standard Augustus fight with plenty of back and forth action! Rangel fought a lot differently in this one than the other fights available of him (eg against Judah) in that he looked more like a slugger than a light-footed in-n-out boxer. Possibly due to the late notice, although he seemed to keep up with the pace well enough.
Augustus looked like he came in fully fit (for once) but not tight technically – his punches were not as accurate and concise as usual. Southpaws seem to always trouble him a little though, and Rangel’s awkward movement and wide punches made it a little harder than expected.
Watch for Rangel’s elbows! Tried a few times and connected with the 4th one. One of the dirtiest of tactics and was good to see him taken out in the end haha.
tl;dr – entertaining contest
I like when Augustus says at the end to the camera: ‘I think I kinda proved myself tonight’ and his coach chuckles. lol, as if he needed to prove himself :)
