Jorge Linares entered this fight with a professional boxing record of 39-3-0 (26 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.1 lightweight in the world. He suffered two consecutive defeats between 2011 and 2012, against Antonio DeMarco (=DeMarco vs Linares) and Sergio Thompson (=Linares vs Thompson), but since then he has collected eight victories winning the vacant Wbc Lw belt against Javier Prieto (=Linares vs Prieto) and defending it once with Kevin Mitchell (=Mitchell vs Linares).
His opponent, Ivan Cano, has an official record of 23-6-2 (15 knockouts) and he entered as the No.37 in the same weight class. His last loss occurred in 2013 when he faced Daniel Ruiz, after this bout he has collected two victories and two draws. A fight from Venezuela in Russian. Only ATBF can dig this out lol good job. I always wonder how these top fights make sense in Venezuela money-wise. A shame those great fighters are not recognized more in the US. On the other hand, the ambiance is great, whenever anything from Linares hits, the crowd erupts!
Tentative first few rounds nonetheless, waking up the awfully uncheerful Russian commentator, who must be sipping his vodka 24/7.
Ouch! Nicely applied to the liver, Cano wanted no more. Pretty tough to diatribe further. He just could not breathe I think.
I just wonder why the #1 is fighting the #37.
Also – these guys probably make the same money there.
In the Wbc ranking Cano is the #10 lightweight but as we have seen from
this bout, he is not among the top10 and this is the reason because we usually don’t follow the organizations rating (every organization – wbc, ibf, wba,
ibo, wbo etc… – has its own ranking). When a boxer wins a world title
he has to defend the title in mandatory or voluntary defenses. In
voluntary defense, as in this case, he has to choose any of the top10
rated contenders. This is a simple explanation but if you want to know
more, you can read the WBC Rules and Regolations:
