Andy Lee entered this fight with a pro boxing record of 34-2-0 (24 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.6 middleweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Gennady Golovkin). The last time he lost was in 2012 when he faced Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (=Chavez Jr vs Lee), since then he has won six consecutive bouts winning the vacant WBO Mw title in his last fight, against Matt Korobov (=Korobov vs Lee).
His opponent, the undefeated Peter Quillin, has a perfect record of 31-0-0 (22 knockouts) and he entered as the No.3 in the same weight class. He won the Wbo Mw title in 2012, against Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam (=N’Dam vs Quillin) and then defended his belt three times, the last one with Lukas Konecny (=Quillin vs Konecny). Quillin vs Lee was scheduled as a middleweight bout but Quillin weighed in 0,6 pounds over the limit of 160 lbs making the bout a non-title fight; undercard of Danny Garcia vs Lamont Peterson. figth of year!
It certainly was a very exciting fight!… One of the best so far this year, but during some of the middle rounds, both fighters were too conservative and seemed to wait and wait for an opportunity to throw the big one.
Round 3 might be the best round of the year so far. ;)
I agree: exciting battle with some nice knockdowns, but long periods of cautious circling. Congratulations to the two fighters, but I preferred the Garcia-Peterson dance.
It’s not bad at all, but not Fight of the Year lol. You must be trolling there :)
Do we guys see the same fight? I agree were 3 knock downs but the fight in general was too slow. Too much caution from both fighters none of them was trying to take the risk. In my opinion this fight doesn’t deserve more than 2 starts.
I totally agree. It shows how low the expectations of the current fans are when there are people raving about what a great fight this was. 12 rounds of two guys looking at each other from long range and pawing away throwing one punch at a time.
The finer points of the art of boxing such as how to throw a proper jab, combination punching, parrying etc. seem to be almost totally lost today. A not so “old timer” like Mike McCallum would have eaten both of these guys alive.
I agree tango. Guess Olivier just hasn’t watched that many fights this year. Though was a better fight than expected.
And Quillen F!d his career going with Haymon.
I loved the excuses the announcers were giving the listeners about why Quillen didn’t fight Korobov.
I liked NBC when they got back into boxing but
this new show sucks. To much BS. Same thing over at ESPN. Cant even stand the web site now. Gone are the good Friday night fights.
): hello Haymon reality TV.
Why the F! cant Andy Lee jab?
Yeah.. maybe I got overexcited with this one! Actually, I watched probably 50+ fights so far this year, so that’s not the problem here.
Tango, you are right about the slow pace of this fight. On the other hand, I don’t think a fast-paced action is necessarily a key factor for a fight to be rated as good or bad. Watching this fight, it seemed to me both fighter knew they could stop their opponent or could be stopped with a single punch at any moment, and that tension made this fight way more interesting than I exepcted.
The rators at allthebestfights rated the Kovalev-Pascal fight as one of the best so far this year. It was not a high paced fight at all. Actually, Pascal, as ever, takes 20 seconds to set up for a single shot. Anyway… after watching this fight a second time, I thought it was a bit overrated.
