Adonis Stevenson entered this fight with a professional boxing record of 25-1-0 (21 KOs=84%) and he is ranked as the No.2 light heavyweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Sergey Kovalev). He suffered his only defeat in 2010 when he faced Darnell Boone, since then he has won 12 consecutive fights taking revenge on Boone (on March 22, 2013, Stevenson vs Boone 2) and then he won the WBC light-Hw title in 2013 against Chad Dawson (The Ring magazine Knockout of the Year: Dawson vs Stevenson). After this bout he has defended his belt four times beating Dmitry Sukhotsky in his last fight (=Stevenson vs Sukhotsky).
His opponent, Sakio Bika, has an official record of 32-6-3 (21 knockouts) and he entered as the No.14 super middleweight; he won the Wbc super-Mw title in 2013, against Marco Antonio Periban (=Bika vs Periban), but then he faced twice Anthony Dirrell: their first bout ended in a draw (=Bika vs Dirrell I) but in the second one Bika was defeated by the American (=Bika vs Dirrell 2). ‘Superman’ Stevenson vs Bika is valid for the WBC World light heavyweight title (Stevenson’s fifth defense). A lot more competitive than all the Quebec Adonis haters said :) Bika remains an interesting gatekeeper, I’d like to see him against Pascal.
Bika was tough and I think he exposed what seems to be one of Stevenson’s major flaw: he is totally resourceless when his back’s against the ropes. In fact, Stevenson is not a very good when fighting on the inside but thanks to his effective and frequent use of his jab, he was able to control most of the fight from the outside. As you know, I live in Quebec but I ain’t one of those “Adonis haters” you called… BUT! In my opinion even though all boxing fans want to see a Kovalev-Stevenson fight, I would be more interested in a Kovalev-Pascal II. Hopefully, it will probably happen in early 2016. Thing is, I don’t feel like Stevenson stands a chance against the russian. Anyway… that’s another story.
At the moment 4 fighters out of the lightheavywight’s top 10 are fighting out of our beautiful province. That’s a problem because local promoters won’t allow very interesting match up between Stevenson, Pascal, Alvarez and Beterbiev unless they become mandatory challengers to one another (haha! I just had a vision of a royal rumble between the four of them!).
LOL a Royal Rumble boxing match! You’re right, it’s a problem that they are all in the same weight class :(
Or how about stevenson-pascal? So much possibilities :)
Hell, I’d actually give Pascal a good chance in that fight. Stevenson looks like he’s slipped slightly from the fighter who fought Dawson & Cloud. He doesn’t look as sharp to me, which is understandable considering he’s getting close to hitting 40 now.
Yes indeed, so many!
I think we can assume there will be a Kovalev-Stevenson fight (Sept. 26 they say).
Pascal-Beterbiev would make an awesome undercard on the same night, but since they share the same trainer, I don’t know if it’s going to be possible.
But anyway, as you pointed out already, Beterbiev is one fight away from a championship bout, and Pascal needs to bounce back after his loss to Kovalev.
Bika almost never got the chance to enter in the fight. He was totally dominated by Stevenson. Just on the last 2 rounds Bika got some minor opportunity and finally connected a very nice right hand.
I also gave Bika the 3rd round, but seriously I don’t understand how the scorecards can be like 115-111, or something like that. I mean, Adonis scored 2 official knockdowns which should give him AT LEAST a +4 lead. A 115-111 scorecard means that this judge gave him no other rounds ?! I don’t get it. 10-10 rounds?… Anyway.
At least the right fighter got the decision, but I had also 2 rounds for Bika only. Drunk judges
I agree with you. In this fight the score cards don’t reflect at all what happened in the ring. However, as we all know, in most of the fights this is usually the case.
It’s terrible.. can you imagine, if Stevenson didn’t score these 2 knockdowns, it would have been a split decision!…
I watch boxing only, but I’ll give this one a try!
Thanks!
I just watched the Marcus-Wilnis fight. I must admit though… I don’t know much about Muay Thai/Kickboxing. I thought the first round was somehow very tight, but still Marcus clearly won the second half of the fight. The punch(+kick)stats were 23% to 28% and overall, compared to the Stevenson-Bika fight, Marcus-Wilnis was a closer contest in my opinion.
Good fight anyway and thanks again!
Hi Olivier,
You are very welcome. Kickboxing is very nice and requires a lot of technique. Honestly, I enjoy more kickboxing than boxing but only when both fighters are good and experienced. Try to see fights of Tyrone Spong (excellent, he is a professional boxer now), D. Ghita, Andy Souwer, Gyorgio Petrosyan (the best), Buakaw Banchamek, J. Valtellini. N Holzken, etc. The 70 Kg category in my opinion is the best within this sport.
Regards,
I too wanted to see Pacal VS Stevenson but before the Kovalev fight.
Now – pointless.
Stevenson is a champion and just fought a guy who lost his last fight and had never fought at LHW. He will not fight Kovalev.
I really hope Kovalev uses green gloves and has Krypton embroidered on his shorts …
i didn’t like Stevenson in this fight! If he fights in this way against kovalev he will lose in less than six rounds
C’mon!!! you have something against the Canadian fighters (remember Valtellini :-)).
Adonis did a very good fight here till the point that it looks like it was just “a man fight only”.
Should I remember you about the Stevenson’s comment you did after the fight between Kovalev and Pascal?
Here you have it ” the only tough opponent for kovalev is Stevenson, but if he escapes i would like to see kovalev among the cruiserweights!!”
So don’t change your mind and be confident
Hey tango2042, trust me that i don’t have anything against Canadian!!!
I remember what I said about Valtellini, he is one of the best but i still think Holzken is better.
And I still think that if Stevenson fight like he did in his previous bouts he could be dangerous…with his left punch he could knock anyone out!!! but the point is that i didn’t like him in this fight and comparing Superman with the last performance of Kovalev, i think the russian is the best one!
Hi Danielsan23,
I was just kidding :-)
However, I hope that all your predictions about results for these two Canadians fighters are wrong if the fights in discussion go ahead.
Honestly, I believe the chances are better for Valtellini fighting Holzken, despite of his low experience, than for Adonis against the Russian which could be a really though fight.
However, for the patriotic point of view, let’s hope for the best.
Regards
I agree. I think Kovalev and Pascal are still the best light-HWs at the moment.
I hope Yvon Michel wins the purse bid, I read he needs at least 10 millions to win it. Maybe the new Colisée will participate Michel said.
“Centre Vidéotron” they call it now.. yuk! :P
en passant, je t’ai envoyé une demande d’ami sur facebook, j’ai un gilet rouge sur ma photo et je me photographie dans un miroir.
Haha! Je me demandais bien c’était qui!
A career shortened by a little jail stint :/
