Fight rated 3 stars by AllTheBestFights.comReview: 2014-06-14, pretty good fight between Ruslan Provodnikov and Chris Algieri: it gets three stars. Ruslan Provodnikov entered this fight with a professional boxing record of 23-2-0 (16 knockouts) and he is ranked as the No.3 light welterweight in the world (currently the #1 in this division is Danny Garcia). Provodnikov suffered his last loss in 2013 when he faced then-undefeated Timothy Bradley but it was a controversial decision (5-stars-fight Bradley vs Provodnikov), he came back to victory in his second bout of 2013 beating Mike Alvarado in a fight valid for the WBO light-Ww belt (4-stars-fight Alvarado vs Provodnikov).
His opponent, the undefeated Chris Algieri, has a perfect record of 19-0-0 (8 knockouts) and he entered as the No.46 welterweight, he has never fought as an amateur because he converted to pro boxing after retiring from kickboxing with a 20-0 record (former Wka and Iska champions). Provodnikov vs Algieri is valid for the WBO light welterweight title (Provodnikov’s first defense), first world title shot for Algieri. Watch the video and rate this fight!

  1. Good fight.
Chris Algieri definitely has proven himself.

Now to rant. F! HBO over and over and over.
Steve Weisfeld needs to get a new job. Why? Because he doesn’t know that there IS a formula for judging rounds in boxing:
Ring Generalship, Clean Punching, and Effective Aggression.
He kept repeating that he gave each and almost every round to Provodnikov because he was the heavier handed of the 2.
None of the 3 criteria is Heavier handed.
He controlled only the 1st and last round. So that means he never had Effective Aggression. He was just simply aggressive. But he doesn’t know anything else.
Lastly clean punch’s. Except for the first round and a middle round that I scored even. He was just winging punch’s. Algieri repeatedly landed.

Oh and Max Kellerman has changed way to much since leaving ESPN. He goes
with the script now. Sad. Wish they would bring back George Foreman. he
didn’t give a sh*t about hyping the contracted fighter.

My score card was 9 – 4 with 1 even.
I don’t use a 10 point system. 1 point per round with 1 extra point per knock down. The “10 Point must system” is F! ludicrous.
Seldomly do we see people get 10-7 rounds. Let alone more than that. What fight would ever be allowed to continue with more than 4 knockdowns in 1 round? NONE – else everyone would be getting sued for negligence.

Now let me say I am surprised by the outcome just like everyone else. I have watched a few Algieri fights and I didn’t feel he had what it would take to win against Provodnikov.

Some good fights coming up !

  2. To expose something is to bring a previously unknown quantity to light. In this case, it was already known that Ruslan suffers against boxers of Algieri’s ilk and caliber (e.g., Herrera). Two of the judges scored the fight for the more active puncher and better boxer. I think they did right, but the notion of exposure seems misplaced.

  4. No 10 made some good points. On ring generalship, clean punching, and effective aggression, I think the fight went to Algieri. If power alone was scored in boxing then Ruslan would probably win all of his fights. Too bad for him, it’s not.

    Shout out to John John.

  6. I’m totally agree with you regarding Steve Weisfeld he doesn’t know what boxing means. He never saw a fight from the a famous Argentine boxer named Nicolino Locche who was called in his time the “untouchable” because he out boxed every of his rivals just with his speed and dodging the rival punches perfectly (he did not have punching power at all). He became the champion in his category in 1968 after defeating P. Fuji in Tokio. This guy have 136 fight with only 4 loses and only 14 KOs in his favor. However he has also 14 draws, may be because judges like Steve that likes only punching power boxers.
Chris shows up that he is an excellent boxer and fully deserves the tittle. In my opinion the score given to him from all the judges was low in his favor since he controlled the fight from the second round to the end.
Steve should find another job soon. He was totally useless here.

  7. LOL you can’t come up with your own judging system after you explained how to correctly judge a fight.
